Daily Prompt: Clean House

Is there “junk” in your life? What kind? How do you get rid of it?

Well of course there’s junk in my life. Everyone has it, in one form or another, and I’m no exception. In fact, I have plenty of junk. I have junk in my head, on my hips, in my home and in my heart. Do I need or even want all that junk? No I do not, yet I hang onto it, so there have to be some reasons.randomthoughts1-248x300

Let’s start with the head. It’s full of all sorts of nonsense, making it difficult for important information to find a comfortable home. I can recite random factoids and song lyrics from 1975, but can I remember my son’s orthodontist appointment or where I put those photos? Often times, the answer is no. Since I know of no way to reorganize my brain, I’m trying to rely on methods outside my memory to help keep me organized. If only my brain worked more like a computer, where I could set up folders for information to access it more easily, and delete that which is no longer relevant. Of course that assumes I would actually do those things, but in reality my computer desktop is full of junk too. At least my computer works more efficiently than my brain, and I’m able to search it quickly, too.

Now on to the body junk, and boy is there lots of it. There is plenty of extra fat, some extra cholesterol, and an assortment of bonus skin cells here and there. I paint a lovely picture, I know. Getting rid of all that body junk isn’t easy. The skin, well, that has to be removed by a doctor, and frankly it hurts, so some of it I just live with (we’re talking little moles and skin tags, people, not horrific lesions). The cholesterol is a little easier to deal with. For a while it involved taking a tiny pill, but exercise has made those pills unnecessary. Yay! In fact exercise, along with a healthy diet, is the way I’m going to keep getting rid of the fat. I totally get it, burn more calories than you take in. Simple. But oh, so difficult! I’m trying, though.

That leads us perfectly into the junk of the heart. This is the emotional junk that we carry around. Here lie the messages that you maybe aren’t quite good enough. Maybe you don’t deserve love. Perhaps you’ll never reach your goals. Self doubt and unhappiness burrow into hidden corners of the heart and take up residence. They have to be exposed and banished. They are like a cancer. They have to be forcibly removed, but often traces of them are left behind. These need to be eradicated with consistent long term positive messages and large doses of love. Even so, they can creep back in. The health of the heart has to be monitored closely and intervention must take place quickly in order to avoid a takeover by those doubts and negative emotions. Fortunately I have a team on my side that loves me, making it much easier to wipe out those bits of emotional junk that do manage to creep back in.donation-box-cropped

Finally, there’s the actual physical junk that invades my living and working spaces. There’s clean and dirty laundry, piles of mail- both opened and unopened, books, magazine, dishes, quilting materials, electronics, toiletries, cleaning supplies, holiday decorations, office supplies, and tons of other junk. Now in all fairness, not much of it is actual “junk” as defined by me. To me “junk” is stuff that is useless or has no value. HOWEVER, too much stuff is too much stuff. As the very wise Flylady says, “you can’t organize clutter.” I know this, and yet clutter tends to accumulate anyway. That’s why so many of my 47 for 47 challenge items have to do with purging, streamlining, and consolidating items. As I sit here looking at my computer table alone, I know I have a big job ahead of me. Again, from the Flylady, “baby steps.” I set a timer and go through one area, tossing what doesn’t belong and putting away items that are out of place. I do this periodically, and it always feels great when I do. I give away items that are in good condition but no longer work for me and my household, and it always feel like a sigh of relief when I discover cleared off surfaces and a bit more breathing room. Now I’m inspired to do some fall cleaning. Look out junk, you’re about to go!

Daily Passion Prompt 18: Inspiration Island

TODAY’S QUESTION

DAY #18:  If you could bring 10 people that inspire you to an island with you and spend one day with each of them, who would they be and why would you take them?

First off, let’s clarify what I’m envisioning with this particular prompt. Let’s start with the location. The particular island we’re talking about is something you might find at the Club Med of my dreams. It is beautiful and has all the amenities that I might want for whatever activity I wish to explore. Secondly, these inspirational people simply show up for their day and spend it with me, sharing their wisdom and insight. They don’t find it strange, they don’t want anything in return, and they don’t complain of jet lag or headaches or anything else that might interfere with our experience. When their day is up they head back to wherever they came from, and I carry on with my next companion. I also limited my selections to people who are currently alive. Just so it didn’t get creepy, you know? So now that we have THAT settled, here we go.

Maldives_Hibiscus_Island_JY171_350A1. Chris Powell. Duh. If you’ve been reading the BulgingButtons for any length of time you know I’m a big fan of his. Chris and I would have a heart to heart, and he would help get me energized and focused to make the most impactful positive changes to my overall wellness. He would teach me the moves I need and set me up with a foolproof plan. At least in my dreams. Oh, and he’s written books. Bonus: he’s not too hard on the eyes either.

2.  Rachael Ray. She can teach me to cook delicious food that’s good for me and that my whole family will eat with pleasure. She also seems incredibly personable, and she’s an author. She is another person who defined her dreams and went for them, and, I’m guessing, keeps doing just that.

3. Stacy London. The TLC What Not to Wear diva could help me dress this body of mine to best advantage, allowing me to strut my stuff and hold my head high, no matter what the scale might say. Feeling confident and sexy does make a difference, and dressing to advantage has a role in how you feel. And did I mention that she also writes?

4. The Dalai Lama. He’s just so doggone nice. And smart. And otherworldly. And hip. Really, I think he’s got it going on. Oh, and he also has written several books.

5. J.K. Rowling. I guess I don’t have to tell you what she’s best known for, do I? I would love to pick her brain. Where does she get it all?! Incredible.

6. Rafe Esquith, teacher and author extraordinaire. He is inspirational, not only to teachers, but far more importantly, to kids. I would love to have an in-depth conversation on the current state of education and the impact it has on kids. I envision a meeting of the minds that will spur me on to orchestrating ever greater opportunities for my students.

7. SARK. She has written and illustrated many inventive, honest, funny, and inspirational books. She definitely thinks in colors and dreams and swirls. I like her style!

8. Tula Pink. One of the modern quilt world’s stars, she’s a designer and author, as well as a quilt maker. I would love to talk inspiration with her.

9. My son. By day nine I will be missing him terribly. I would love to spend a day in paradise with him without the distractions of school and work and obligations and responsibilities. I would love to just relax and have fun with him, and to connect with him as we splash in the ocean and bite into juicy pineapple, our favorite.

10. Last, but certainly not least, my sweetheart. I would finish this incredibly transformative experience by sharing an uninterrupted day alone with him. Bonus: he would stay the night and we would go home together.

The bad news? This scenario is infinitely unlikely to happen. The good news? I have links to the wisdom of all of these inspirational people, except my family.  I get to see my family in real life, though, so it’s not so bad. Thank goodness for the written word. Although it will never be a perfect substitute for being there, it can still convey a lifetime of learning.

Daily Passion Prompt 12: Stick to the Point

TODAY’S QUESTION

If you had to choose just one topic to write 50 different blog posts about — what would it be?

No problem. I could write 50 different blog posts on several topics. Of course that would mean several different blogs if I wanted to be coherent, but since I don’t, and I’m not, I would lump them all together in once place. You know, like I do here.

If I had to stick to one topic I certainly could, but I haven’t given myself any such constraints. For the sake of argument though, here are my topics of choice in semi-random order:

rez healthy11. getting healthier and fitter and leaner and meaner, minus the meaner

funny_cartoon_female_teacher_photosculpture-p153834425853491395qdjh_4002. teaching

images3. parenting

2287080737_8f690a469f4. quilting

Writing a List5. the life and times of me!

The really great thing is that I get to use this blog as a platform for all of these topics, and any others that happen to cross my mind. I love having options and not having to choose!
