Not bad for a fat girl

Happy Birthday to my Boy

Today was the first time in years that I didn’t serve birthday cake for breakfast on this date. You see, that’s our family tradition, or at least it was. Today, however, my son woke up on his birthday away from home.Birthday-cake-clip-art-clipart-cliparts-for-you-2.jpg

Now he wasn’t far from home, just a few miles away in the dorm, but still, he wasn’t here. He turned nineteen today, and it was strange not starting the day with a little birthday party.

He’s growing up, and changing, and so our traditions are changing too. We went to lunch with his grandmother today, and that was a wonderful way to celebrate. Not the same, of course, but still we spent time together.

Frankly, I was pleased that he made the time to do it. After all, when you’re a college student so many things compete for your time and attention, and typically your mother and grandmother don’t top the list. He did it for me. I know that. I appreciate it.

My son has matured so much in the past year. The change from a senior in high school to an almost finished freshman in college has been remarkable. He’s accepted the change with grace. I can learn from him.

Happy birthday, son. I love you.

Countdown to 50

It even looks awful

What have I gotten myself into this time?

I’ve agreed to a challenge in which I will consume one veggie smoothie per week in place of an actual dinner with the thought that I will thereby lose 50 pounds over the course of a year.

You see, this summer I’ll be turning 49, and it would be fantastic to face 50 a little leaner. Ok, maybe not leaner, but with 50 fewer pounds of fat hugging my body.

How did this challenge come about? Well… one of our favorite breakfast places has begun serving smoothies as well as delicious skillets and omlettes. No, we didn’t order one, but it got my sweetheart thinking that if we replace just one meal per week, it could make a big impact. That and cutting down on the chips and dip and Hot Tamales, of course. Before I knew it, I was agreeing to try it. We’ll begin after my summer trip, so that will give us about 50 weeks to drop the 50 pounds. That’s totally reasonable.

Oh man, I’m afraid already. I HATE vegetable smoothies. If you have any recipes that don’t taste exactly like vomit, I’d love to hear from you.

Happy Birthday Cousin

bdaycupcakecardIt’s my cousin’s birthday.

I don’t hear from her anymore.

She had a baby three years ago. I made her a quilt. A really pretty one. It was bright and modern and fun. It was meant to be used, not stored somewhere so it doesn’t get dirty.

I mailed it to her.

I hadn’t seen her in years.

I hadn’t known she was pregnant.

Still, she’s my cousin.

Our mothers are sisters. They don’t get along very well. Our mothers are not our birth mothers. She was adopted from South America when she was three years old. I was adopted from the hospital where I was born and taken home when I was three days old.

She’s several years younger then me.

I loved her right away.

She lived several states away and we rarely saw each other growing up.

She had some hard times.

Some really hard times.

Nobody likes to talk about it.

Her mother won’t talk about her.

Her mother moved back to her home state.

My cousin lives where she was raised.

I don’t know if she got the baby quilt.

I texted. I Facebook messaged. I tried.

I hope she got it. I hope she uses it. I hope her little girl likes it.

I hope someday she’ll talk to me again.

I hope she has a good birthday.
